When Science Meets Compassion

“The question is not why the addiction, but why the pain.”

We may not be responsible for the way the world creates our mind, but we can learn to take responsibility for the mind with which we create our world

Compassionate Inquiry

Compassionate Inquiry is a psychotherapeutic method developed by Dr. Gabor Maté that reveals what lies beneath the appearance we present to the world. Using Compassionate Inquiry, the therapist unveils the level of consciousness, mental climate, hidden assumptions, implicit memories and body states that form the real message that words both express and conceal. Through Compassionate Inquiry, the client can recognize the unconscious dynamics that run their lives and how to liberate themselves from them.

Addiction

Dr. Maté, renowned addiction expert, calls for a compassionate approach toward addiction, whether in ourselves or in others. Dr. Maté believes that the source of addictions is not to be found in genes but in the early childhood environment. In The Realm Of Hungry Ghosts, one of his best-selling books, draws on cutting-edge science and real-life stories to show that all addictions originate in trauma and emotional loss.

Mind / Body Health

Emotional stress is a major cause of physical illness, from cancer to autoimmune conditions and many other chronic diseases. The brain and body systems that process emotions are intimately connected with the hormonal apparatus, the nervous system, and in particular the immune system. Dr. Maté’s insight into the relationship of the mind and the body are presented in: When the Body Says No, a groundbreaking book published in multiple languages on five continents.

Parenting is not about techniques. Parenting is about Relationship. It’s that simple...

Childhood Development & Parenting

The essential condition for healthy development is the child’s relationship with nurturing adults. Hold On to Your Kids, co-authored with the eminent developmental psychologist Dr. Gordon Neufeld, provides insight into the environmental factors necessary for healthy child development, how these conditions are increasingly under threat in today’s society, and how parents and teachers can maintain their leading position in face of the multiple challenges posed by modern culture.

I believe that ADHD can be better understood if we examine people’s lives, not only bits of DNA

AD(H)D

Rather than an inherited disease, Attention Deficit Disorder is a reversible impairment and a developmental delay, with origins in infancy. It is rooted in multi-generational family stress and in disturbed social conditions in a stressed society. In Scattered Minds, Dr. Maté oers a completely new perspective on this disorder, providing hope for adults with ADD, and parents seeking to support their children.

Trauma

The Myth of Normal is a groundbreaking investigation into the causes of illness, a bracing critique of how our society breeds disease, and a pathway to health and healing.
